Are you using an unactivated version of Windows 11 on your computer? So far, Microsoft has only been blocking certain personalization settings in the Windows settings menu, and showing the Activate Windows watermark if you’re using an unactivated version of Windows. However, they may soon block you from modifying Microsoft Edge settings as well.
According to Windows Latest, Microsoft is testing a couple of new flags that will block certain Microsoft Edge features if you’re using an unactivated version of Windows 11. These flags are — msEdgeActivatedStateCheckAndUpdate, msEdgeNonActivatedOSTrigger, and msEdgeLockSettingsInNonActivatedOS.
Out of these flags, msEdgeLockSettingsInNonActivatedOS seems to be working currently. It prevents you from modifying Edge’s appearance, how Edge starts up, and few other settings. You’ll see the following message when try to use Microsoft Edge on an unactivated Windows 11 PC.
We noticed your Windows is not activated, some customizations has been limited”
when you try to use Microsoft Edge on an unactivated Windows 11 system.
Currently, these changes are only available in the Edge Canary build, and it’s highly unlikely that Microsoft will introduce them in the stable version of Edge. This is because this move would likely force users to abandon Microsoft Edge and switch to another browser, something Microsoft wouldn’t want.
