Halfstone’s Renewal Review works like a diff tool for insurance policies. The more interesting part is what the software refuses to do.

Programmers have a word for comparing two versions of the same file: a diff. The old version goes on one side, the new version on the other, and every line that changed stands out. It is one of the most useful ideas in software, and almost nobody applies it to the documents that quietly cost them the most money each year.

Insurance renewals are a good example. A typical household carries several personal policies, and each one renews every six or twelve months. Every renewal comes with a new declarations page, the one or two page summary of premium, deductibles and limits. The carrier sends it, the customer files it, and the comparison against last year never happens. The old page is in a different email, the layout has shifted a little, and checking it by hand is tedious enough that nobody bothers.
Halfstone, a company based in Salt Lake City, built its product around making that comparison automatic.

    About Halfstone

The data model is the declarations page

The input is deliberately simple. A customer adds each policy, whether auto, home, renters, condo, umbrella, life or pet, by uploading the declarations page or typing in the handful of numbers that matter: premium, deductibles, limits and renewal date. From there Halfstone builds a single household view that shows every policy in the same structure, so an auto policy and a homeowners policy read side by side instead of living in two PDFs that look nothing alike.

That normalization is the unglamorous work underneath the product. Once every policy is stored as the same set of fields, the rest follows. Reminders get keyed to each renewal date and go out well before it arrives. Each term leaves a clean record of what it looked like, which is exactly what the next comparison needs.

    Renewal Review

The flagship feature is the Renewal Review. When a new declarations page comes in, the customer adds it, and Halfstone places this term next to last term, field by field. A premium that moved from $1,212 to $1,390 gets flagged. A collision deductible that went from $500 to $1,000 gets flagged. A line that existed last term and is missing this term gets flagged. (These numbers are illustrative.)
The design goal is that a change should be impossible to miss without being alarming. A difference is shown clearly, not with a flashing warning. Next to each line sits a plain English explanation of what the term means, placed right beside the number instead of buried in a help center three clicks away.

What the software will not do

The more unusual design decision is the list of things Halfstone leaves out on purpose.

It does not quote rates. It does not sell policies or act as an agent, broker, carrier or adjuster. It does not recommend a carrier, a coverage amount, or a specific change to a policy. It does not say whether a loss would be covered. It will explain what a term means, and it stops there.

Those limits shape the product in practical ways. There is no “switch and save” button, no list of partner carriers, no referral link tucked under a Renewal Review. The output of the comparison is information, and what happens next is up to the household and whoever they decide to call.

The business model is built to match. Halfstone takes no commissions, referral fees or partner payments, and it does not share customer data with agents or carriers. Revenue comes entirely from subscriptions. A free tier covers up to two policies, the household view and renewal reminders. Halfstone Plus costs $5 a month or $48 a year and adds unlimited policies, the Renewal Review for every renewal, a shared account for two people, and a downloadable one page summary of everything the household carries.

The line between the two tiers is easy to remember. Knowing when things renew is free. Seeing exactly what changed is paid.

    Who it is built for

The target user is not someone shopping for insurance today. It is the household that already has coverage, usually a homeowner or long-term renter with two cars and maybe an umbrella or term life policy, and that has been caught off guard by a renewal at least once. For that person the problem was never finding a policy. It was noticing when the policy changed.

That focus also explains the tone of the product. The audience is tired of insurance marketing, so the interface is meant to feel like a well-kept file rather than an ad. Numbers carry the screen. Dates are easy to find. Explanations sit next to the thing they explain. Anyone curious can look through the Halfstone policy dashboard and the two plans before signing up.

An old idea in a new place

None of this is technically exotic. Putting last year’s page next to this year’s is something anyone could do with two printouts and a highlighter. Halfstone’s bet is that most people never will, and that software can do it for them every single time a policy renews.

    About Halfstone

Halfstone is organizing software for household insurance policies. It is not an insurance provider, agent or advisor. Halfstone is based at 4505 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City, UT 84124, and can be reached at (888) 338-9211 or support@halfstone.com.
