Recently, some users have reported (1,2,3)a peculiar issue after installing the KB5040442 update for Windows 11. They noticed a black border around selected files and folders in File Explorer, particularly when light mode is enabled.
This change has not been well-received by the majority of users. Many find it unnecessary, irritating, and visually unappealing. If you’ve encountered this problem, you’re certainly not alone.
You might be wondering if there’s a way to turn off this feature. Unfortunately, the answer is no. After researching, I discovered a response from a Microsoft employee, stating that “this is a small change to help make the selection easier to see,” confirming that it’s an accessibility feature, not a bug.
The employee also mentioned that Microsoft will continue to monitor user feedback. So, there’s a possibility they might revert this change if they receive a significant amount of negative feedback.
If you’re unhappy with this update, I encourage you to join the discussion on the Feedback Hub and share your thoughts. For now, we’ll have to deal with the black borders. Rest assured, I’ll keep an eye on this matter and update you with any new developments.
In my opinion, this could be a beneficial accessibility feature. However, it should not be enabled by default. Microsoft should provide an option to toggle this setting so users can decide whether to use it based on their preferences.
