Recuva is a free data recovery software developed by Piriform, a subsidiary of Avast. It is a powerful tool that can recover lost or deleted files from a variety of sources, including hard drives, USB drives, and SD cards. SD cards are a popular choice for storing photos, videos, and other important data, but they are also prone to data loss due to accidental deletion, formatting, or corruption.
In this article, we will guide you through the process of recovering data from an SD card using Recuva.
Understanding SD Card Data Loss
Before we dive into the recovery process, it’s important to understand the common causes of SD card data loss. The most common cause is accidental deletion, where files are deleted by mistake. Another common cause is formatting, where the SD card is formatted by mistake or intentionally without backing up the data. Corruption of the SD card due to physical damage or software errors can also lead to data loss. In some cases, the SD card may become inaccessible, making it impossible to retrieve the data without specialized tools.
Preparing for SD Card Recovery with Recuva
Before you begin the recovery process, there are a few things you need to do to prepare. First, stop using the SD card immediately to avoid overwriting the lost data. Second, check if the SD card is physically damaged or corrupted. If it is, you may need to seek professional help to recover the data. Third, download and install Recuva on your computer. Recuva is available for free on the Piriform website and can be installed on Windows-based computers.

Common SD Card Recovery Errors and How to Avoid Them
SD card recovery with Recuva is a straightforward process, but there are some common errors that can occur. One of the most common errors is incomplete recovery, where some of the recovered files are corrupted or incomplete. This can happen if the SD card is physically damaged or the data is overwritten. To avoid this, stop using the SD card immediately after data loss and avoid formatting or writing new data to it.
Another common error is overwriting the recovered data, which can happen if the recovered files are saved to the same SD card. To avoid this, save the recovered files to a different drive or location.
Advanced SD Card Recovery with Recuva
Recuva offers some advanced features for SD card recovery, such as the ability to recover files from damaged or formatted SD cards. To use these features, select the “Options” tab in Recuva and choose the appropriate settings. You can also use the “Deep Scan” option for more thorough scanning of the SD card.
However, these advanced features may take longer to complete and may not always guarantee successful recovery.

Many years ago I “lost” the content of an USB flash drive because of a crap-cheap USB hub.
Recuva found nothing…
Then I found a program called DiskDigger (I’d never heard of it), and this program recovered perhaps 95% to 98% of the files at my flash drive (boy, was I glad…).
However, it was a demo version and I had to wait 5 seconds to recover and save the next file… but it worked better than Recuva. If Recuva does nothing, then maybe DiskDigger will.
