Microsoft is working on adding the ability to show an additional search box next to the address bar, providing convenience and efficiency for users who prefer a separate search tool. The good thing about this search box is that you can set the preferred search engine
While the browser’s address bar doubles as a search bar, some users find it more convenient to have a separate search box readily available. This allows for quicker access to search engines and facilitates multitasking by enabling simultaneous searches and browsing.
Depending on the search engine you set, the search result will then open in a new tab. The search pop-up appears with suggestions and also with the ability to customize the search box.
How to Show Additional Search Box in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft is currently testing this feature in Canary starting at 123.0.2413.0. However, this can be activated if it does not appear yet. Create a shortcut from the Edge Canary, open the settings, and then add this under Target: after a space:
--enable-features=msSearchBoxInToolbar,msSearchBoxInToolbarSearchInteractionTrigger,msSearchBoxInToolbarShownTrigger
After that, you can open the browser via this shortcut and then you have the search in the address bar.
It is possible that this method doesn’t work for all users, in this situation need to make until this feature is available to you.
Show/Hide Additional Search Box in Edge Toolbar
Doing this will also add the setting related to the additional search box in the Appearance setting of Edge browser from where you select whether you want to show or hide the search box. You can manage this by going to edge://settings/appearance
, as shown in the following screenshot:
The search engines page is not working, this COULD indicate that Microsoft is making some changes there, maybe in the future it will be possible to use one search engine in the first search box and another in the second.
Isn’t it cool if it lets us use different search engines in the browser? Maybe that option will be available in the future, for now, both boxes use the same search engine. What is your opinion about this, share your thoughts in the comments.
Thanks, leo for the great discovery
