Some users are reporting that Edge browser crashing whenever they’re trying to type something into the address bar. If you made up to this blog post, then chances are you also facing the same issue.
As per the information shared by the users, the browser is crashing only when they’re using Google as default search engine in Edge browser, while with Bing as default search engine its working properly.
One user illustrated how the Edge browser crashing when searching in normal mode. While the browser is working fine in InPrivate mode.
The good news is that the Microsoft Dev team is already aware of this issue and shared via tweet that they are investing and the issue will be resolve soon. They didn’t share any information about what caused the issue.
Update 06/08/2020 – Microsoft Edge team explained on Reddit what causing the Edge browser to crash. They have also released the Edge stable v84.0.552.52 with a fix. Make sure to your browser to latest version available.
As a temporary solution, Microsoft Dev suggested users to Turn off Search Suggestions. Here’s how you can do that
Launch Microsoft Edge browser and then search settings page by clicking this link: edge://settings/search.
Here, turn off “Show me search and site suggestions using my typed characters“.
Alternatively, some users suggested that changing the Default search engine from Google to Bing or DuckDuckGo fixed the issue for them.
In case, you’re not happy with the solution suggested above and keep using Google search as a default search engine, then you can try this workaround suggested by Reddit user to fix the issue:
Launch Microsoft Edge and then go to Settings > Privacy and service > Address bar >Manage search engine. You can directly reach the same setting page by going to edge://settings/searchEngines
Here, click on the Add button. In Add Search Engine dialog, you need to following information:
- Search Engine – Google
- Keyword –
www.google.com
- URL with %s in place of query –
{google:baseURL}search?q=%s&{google:RLZ}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:iOSSearchLanguage}{google:searchClient}{google:sourceId}{google:contextualSearchVersion}ie={inputEncoding}
Click on the Add button.
Now scroll down to the bottom and look for new entry which you have added using steps discussed above. Here, click on the Ellipse icon (…) and select Make Default.
After doing this you should be able to use Edge browser with Google as default search engine.
