So What is MSTSC.exe in Windows 11/10? It is software that comes preinstalled in Windows OS and allows users to connect to a PC via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The purpose of this software is to establish a connection between two computers and allow users to get access to a remote host desktop.

In the process of connecting two PC using MSTSC.exe, your computer will act as a host, while the computer to which you’re establishing a connection via RDP is named as a client.

When establishing a remote session as a host, you need to be running Windows 11/10 Pro or Enterprise. While users running any edition of Windows 11/10 can act as Remote Desktop clients. MSTSC.exe comes preinstalled in all editions of Windows OS, so you don’t need an additional program to establish a connection.

To get a full list of Command Line Argument that MSTSC support, launch Windows Powershell and type mstsc.exe / , a dialogue box will appear with a list.

Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) MSTSC.exe - Command Line Argument that MSTSC

    MSTSC [<connection file>] [/v:<server[:port]>] [/g:<gateway>] [/admin] [/f[ullscreen]] [/w:<width> /h:<height>] [/public] | [/span] [/multimon] [/edit "connection file"] [/restrictedAdmin] [/remoteGuard] [/prompt] [/shadow:<sessionID> [/control] [/noConsentPrompt]]

The explanation for each parameter in the syntax is as follows-

    • connection file – This is used to specify the name of the ‘.RDP’ file.
    • /v:<gateway> – This parameter is used to specify the RD gateway server.
    • admin – This connects you to a session for administering the server.
    • /f – Using this parameter, the remote desktop session is started in fullscreen.
    • /w:<width> – You can specify the width of the Remote desktop window using this parameter.
    • /h:<height> – It is used to specify the height of the Remote desktop window.
    • /public – Runs Remote Desktop in public mode.
    • /span – This will match the width and height of the remote desktop with the local virtual desktop. It allows spanning across multiple monitors.
    • /multimon – This will see the layout of the multiple monitors in the Remote Desktop session to be similar to the current client-side configuration.
    • /edit – Opens the specified .RDP connection file for editing.
    • /restrictedAdmin – Using this parameter, you will be connected to the PC in the restricted Administration mode. In this mode, details and credentials will not be sent to the PC.
    • /remoteGuard – This will prevent your credentials from being sent to the remote PC. When using this parameter, you will be using a Remote guard to connect your device to the remote PC.
    • /prompt – This parameter will ask you for the credentials when you connect to the remote PC.
    • /shadow:<sessionID> – Specifies the ID of the session to shadow.
    • /control – You will be able to control the session when shadowing.
    • /noConsentPrompt – Shadowing can be done without the user’s consent with this parameter.

When using Remote Desktop Protocol or MSTSC.exe, you must know that:

    • You will find the Default.rdp file in the Documents folder. This will be available for each user but will be hidden.
    • The .rdp files that the users create are saved in the Documents folder. However, users do have the option to save them anywhere else.
    • The monitors must have the same resolution, and they should be aligned horizontally if you want to span. You cannot span on monitors vertically as this is not supported.

That’s all about the MSTSC.exe (RDP) on your Windows 11/10 PC. You can use it to access RDP and control your PC from another. You can follow the above guide, and you will be able to use MSTSC.exe on your Windows 11 PC.
