Microsoft Edge in Canary Channel also get support for PWA Apps on taskbar to show Shortcuts menu. Let’s learn how to enable and start using it.
In our previous blog post, we shared with you about Chrome adding support for PWAs app icon on taskbar to show shortcuts menu. Now Microsoft also added same functionality to its Chromium based Edge browser.
After installing PWA using Edge browser, if you right click on the same PWA available on the taskbar it shows nothing. But if you right click on the native app pinned on the taskbar, it shows menu with shortcuts for various tasks.
Microsoft recently added support for PWA Icons on taskbar to show Shortcuts in Edge browser in Canary channel. At the moment, the feature is hidden behind flags and users have to enable it manually to start using the feature. Here’s how you can do that:
Launch Microsoft Edge in Canary channel. Make sure, you’re running v84.0.513.0 or above.
Next, you need to visit edge://flags/#enable-desktop-pwas-app-icon-shortcuts-menu. Here, using the “Desktop PWAs app icon shortcuts menu” drop-down change settings from Default to Enabled.
Click on the Restart button to apply the changes.
At this point, you have successfully enabled the feature.
To start using the feature, you need to visit PWA demo site called Sadchonks and install it as app using Microsoft Edge and then Pin it to taskbar or in Start.
Now if you right-click on same PWA app either on the Taskbar or in Start menu, it will show you Shortcut menu to access common tasks; New Chonks and Saved Chonks.
As the information shared on the flag description, Edge for Android won’t be getting this functionality as of now.
If you’re using Microsoft Edge browser as default browser on your computer, then why don’t you try this feature and let us know your opinion in the comments.
