From the last few days, some windows 10 users reporting on various forums that Windows Defender skipping files during scan due to network scanning settings or configured exclusion. A notification about the same thing also appears in the notification area.
After users perform a quick or full scan using Windows Defender, it shows the notification with the following message:
“Items skipped during scan”
The Windows Defender Antivirus can skipped an item due to exclusion or network scanning settings.
Although, if you check the following screenshot, you will find out that there’s no exclusion configured in Windows Security:
Fix – Windows Defender Skipping Files Bug
Previously it was possible to fix the solution by Enabling Network Files Scanning in Windows Defender, but it was a temporary solution and not recommended by Microsoft.
Microsoft was already aware of the issue and starting today rolled out an update KB4052623 for Windows Defender. The update will reach your computer via Windows Update in the next few days.
The same update is available from Microsoft Update and WSUS. If you want to get the update manually, then you can get it through this link. The update will be available for following editions of the Windows 10:
- Windows 10 (Pro, Enterprise, and Home editions)
- Windows Server 2019
- Windows Server 2016
KB4052623 for Windows Defender comes with monthly updates and fixes for the Antimalware platform that is used by Windows Defender Antivirus in Windows 10. The same update increases the engine version to 4.18.2003.8.
