1. Launch Messenger app on your phone.
2. Tap on the Profile picture icon available on the upper right corner.
3. Here, scroll down and tap on the Privacy and Terms.
4. Next, tap on Deactivate Messenger and then tap on Deactivate. May you will be asked to enter the account password for the confirmation.
This will instantly deactivate Facebook Messenger. Although, this will not delete or hide your conversation which you have made with your friends. Your friends also able to check and read chat history.
How to Reactivate Facebook Messenger
At any point, if you want to start using your Facebook Messenger account again, then all you need to do is to log in using the same credentials.
Note: If you choose to reactivate Facebook messenger, then this will also reactivate Facebook account. In case, you just want to keep using the Messenger, then you need to deactivate Facebook account agian.
