From last few months, rumors were coming from different sources that Edge browser, the Windows 10 default web browser will be moved to Google’s open-source Chromium software in the desktop version. Microsoft’s VP Joe Belfiore already confirmed the rumor in this blog post.
For your knowledge, Chromium is an open-source web browser project started by Google, that does not carry several proprietary components. Its rendering engine, blink accompanied by various technologies, generally used by the popular modern browser like Opera and Vivaldi as a base.
Currently, Microsoft will keep using Chakra and EdgeHTML, the software giants own engines for content rendering and JS since both are highly used by UWP and Store apps. But in the upcoming days, the company will switch to Google’s Chromium engine.
Microsoft finally released the first preview build of Edge browser based on Chromium open source project. Microsoft also following the same naming scheme for Chrome development which includes:
- Edge Canary – The preview build will be released daily. The Canary builds are what the company working on yesterday.
- Edge Dev – The preview build will be released weekly. The dev builds are the best representation of our improvements in the past week.
- Edge Beta – The preview build will be released every six
- The Beta channel will be the most stable Microsoft Edge preview experience.
To get started, the company released Canary and Dev channel builds, while the Beta channel will be available soon. These channels support all versions of Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 accompanied by MacOS.

Download Microsoft’s Chromium Edge browser
If you can’t wait to try the Microsoft’s new Edge browser based on Chromium, then here goes the steps:
Head over to Microsoft Edge Insider page and then click on the Download button listed under Dev Channel and Canary Channel.
This will open the Microsoft Software License Terms dialog box, here click on the Accept and Download button.
Instantly Chromium Edge online installer will start downloading. At last, run the Setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
